FISHING & COASTAL COMMUNITIES

MIT Sea Grant works with fishing and coastal communities to understand the issues – environmental, social, and regulatory – that affect community members’ lives and livelihood. Our research, liaison, and outreach efforts are designed to identify problems and seek solutions that balance these communities’ needs with the critical goal of sustaining a healthy environment. WE PROVIDE

• Interactive exhibits, research projects, and outreach programs for sharing the rich history and culture of coastal communities with school children, residents, and tourists
• Guides and training tools to help improve safety, preparedness, and crisis management
• Social science professionalism, and increasing accessibility to qualified social scientists to stakeholders

ACTIVITIES

• Manage and sustain active and productive fisheries
• Provide safety training and other technical assistance for fishing communities
• Manage space-use conflicts in the marine environment
• Develop and implement fisheries management plans and Social Impact Assessments (SIAs) in response to significant regulatory change
