ESRDC – Designing and Powering the Future Fleet Additional Task 1.4.3 Concept Refinement

Lead Pi: Chrys Chryssostomidis · 6/2014 - 10/2016

Project Personnel: Julie Chalfant

Project number: 2014-ESRDC-04-LEV

The proposed work effort is to provide technical support for an extensive design exercise to support of development of a 10,000 ton ship design concept featuring a 20 kV dc, 100 MW integrated power system. At a minimum, the baseline and derivative designs will consider and demonstrate the advantages (or disadvantages) of advanced silicon carbide power electronics on ship feasibility, performance, and arrangement. Where possible, other alternative and emerging technologies (such as advanced thermal systems) will also be considered in the design exercise. This design and analysis activity is projected to take place during a 17 month period (from June 2014 through October 2015) and is expected to produce multiple (~10) design iterations. This effort will support the development of ONRís proposal for a future Innovative Naval Prototype (INP).
