Coastal wetland ecosystems are thought to sequester and store carbon acting as carbon ìsinks.î However, increased nitrogen flowing into coastal marshes from septic systems and fertilized fields and lawns hinders carbon absorption. This proposal initiates development of a new sensor using infrared spectroscopy to allow scientists to identify wetland carbons and trace their origins. Such a sensor can provide significant data to resource managers and the general public about what is affecting coastal ecosystems.
