Lorentz actuators have been proven to be effective both as turbulent drag reduction devices and as acoustic modems. In this project, the researchers are using laboratory experiments and numerical simulations to investigate the efficiency and effectiveness of the actuators. They are also exploring the possibility of using Lorentz actuators as acoustic modems in underwater communications. The work is expected to increase the robustness and efficiency of hybrid slip/electromagnetic actuatorsin reducing turbulent drag and noise in AUVs and surface ships.
