Michael DeFilippo
Research Engineer
Mike DeFilippo is a Research Engineer at MIT Sea Grant AUV laboratory specializing in electrical engineering. Prior to attaining his engineering degree and beginning his career at MIT, Mr. DeFilippo was a LASER and Infrared electronics technician in the US Air Force. Past research projects include ROV and sonar deployments to study deep water coral in the Gulf of Maine. His current work is focused on researching and designing an underwater wireless battery charging system for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle applications. DeFilippo is also an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
DeFilippo is also part of a project called the Robot-X Challenge, which is a student run competition to build an autonomous surface vessel and that will complete specific tasks on its own. Additionally he is working on upgrading the Reef Explorer 3 (Rex3) which is a non-tethered underwater ROV. The Rex3 ROV will be attached to an automatic deployment system upon an autonomous surface vessel. Together this will be the Rex4. The surface vessel will have the ability to deploy the ROV at a predetermined location without any human interaction. The ROV will be controlled by any computer with an internet connection.
