MIT Sea Grant’s Sea Perch Program Travels to Cyprus
In September 2008, MIT Sea Grant partnered with The Cyprus Institute: Energy, Environment and Water Research Center [ https://eewrc.cyi.ac.cy/?q=node/1 ] to lead Sea Perch workshops for 15 teachers and almost 100 Cypriot student. During two workshops (one for teachers and one for students), MITSG staff Sarah Olivo and Mike Soroka taught the teachers and students how to build a Sea Perch and how to use the ROV for science and ocean exploration. The teachers and students also gained an understanding of the math and engineering principles behind a Sea Perch. “It was one of our most successful Sea Perch endeavors,” says Olivo, of the project¡s first international foray. “We spent a week converting an old cafeteria into the largest Sea Perch lab ever. The results were amazing. Every Sea Perch built worked perfectly,” she says.Plans for more international workshops are underway.
