Guest speaker, Dale Kerper, presents “Numerical Models of Coastal Flooding and Erosion: Predicting the effects of Climate ChangeŒ

Dale Kerpe, Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) Senior Engineer, will visit MIT Sea Grant Tuesday for a special presentation on DHI as one of the world¡s leading research institutes for hydraulic engineering. Kerper will discuss some of the ongoing research projects that may offer ideas for possible future collaborations with MIT Sea Grant. This includes working with experimental and numerical models and methods for offshore, coastal and river hydrodynamics using DHI¡s MIKE software package and LITPACK applications tools. Some application of these numerical models will be presented including the flood forecast model of the Venice Lagoon, current and wave modeling of the San Francisco, Cheasapeake and Galveston.Kerper has over 20 years of modeling experience in a wide variety of fields, including offshore, coastal, estuarine and riverine environments. His recent experience focuses on tides, storm surge,wave modeling, including overland flow for flood inundation studies. Kerper has performed and reviewed numerous flood studies for FEMA in coastal, riverine and alluvial environments, and is an acting reviewer for FEMA for the ongoing restudies of Louisiana and Texas coastlines. Relevant past experiences includes implementing a storm surge modeling system for the City of Venice Flood Warning System, and recently assisting Louisiana State University with implementing a Wave Forecast System for the Gulf of Mexico.This event is free and open to the public.
