In their daily fishing trips, commercial fishers observe the habitat and habits of their prey, noting changes over time and developing theories to explain their observations. The collective knowledge of active fishers is rich in detail about the ecosystem in which they work. This perspective article summarizes a report on a pilot project to systematically gather information from fishers about marine fish habitat and effects of fishing gear in order to help managers define essential fish habitat.
