High-bandwidth, Low-power, Short-range Optical Communication Underwater

The authors show that low-cost, low-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) can be used for high-bandwidth, low-power, short-range, optical communication underwater. A model of the communication rates that can be achieved was developed, and two implementations (at wave-lengths of 660 nm and 450 nm) designed with off-the-shelf components were analyzed. Better communication rates were made possible by new high- intensity LEDs and careful selection of the appropriate photodetector.
