Acoustic Positioning in a Fading Multipath Environment

In many acoustic positioning scenarios the expected first arrival is unreliable due to high ambient noise levels or occasional shadowing by bottom topography. When it is possible to predict where the additional arrivals will appear the multipath pattern can be used to produce a positioning system which is robust to the fading of a subset of the arrivals. This paper presents an algorithm for utilizing multipath arrivals to improve position accuracy in environments where the direct path arrival is unreliable.
