This report highlights presentations given in a two-day symposium on autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and will be particularly relevant to those interested in either the scientific or commercial aspects of AUVs. The synopses of presentations include: how AUV technology can improve coastal monitoring and management; a description of the autonomous ocean sampling network, whereby numerous AUVs operate together through a base buoy; time-constrained surveys; acoustic navigation in ocean waveguides; and discussions of the functions and performance of various AUV subsystems.
