Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) will allow oceanographers to collect more data at a lower cost than has been possible with traditional means. This will require sensing and measurement systems adhering to the size and power limits imposed by AUVs. This paper presents an overview of the main parameters of interest to oceanographers and marine scientists. In describing two sample oceanographic missions for AUVs, the researchers identify existing systems that are suitable for use on AUVs and note promising new sensor technologies under development.
