Acoustic Navigation for Arctic Under-ice AUV Missions

This paper describes plans for a spring mission employing the AUV Odyssey II to study the dynamical and mechanical behavior of the Arctic ice cover. The mission's goal of periodic measurements of the under-ice topography requires accurate and reliable navigation to ensure the vehicle's successful operation and recovery. In this paper, researchers present technological requirements for the AUV Odyssey II, with special emphasis on the development of a robust, very long baseline acoustic navigation system.
