Application of Ground-penetrating Radar in Coastal Stratigraphic Studies

While ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been used to better understand many different depositional environments, its use in coastal areas has been limited. This report relays findings from a study of several barrier beaches and spits along the New England coast. The results show GPR to be an important tool in identifying and characterizing different stratigraphic units that make up a barrier and in determining sediment budgets of coastal systems. In conjunction with more conventional methods for studying barriers, GPR profiles also can provide information regarding relative sea level changes, sediment source and supply, and the effect of storms.
