Acoustic Bearing Measurement in a Multipath Environment

Reliable underwater navigation is currently one of the largest stumbling blocks for the development of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Because conventional navigation systems have serious shortcomings in AUVs, acoustic navigation systems such as ultra-short baseline (USBL) systems are important tools. The use of digital-signal processing (DSP) technology, coupled with an understanding of the acoustic environment, can enhance the performance and flexibility of USBL systems. This publication discusses the implementation of a DSP-based USBL system and presents in-water test results.
