Economic Ocean Survey Capability with AUVs

This article reviews the characteristics required to make autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) economical ocean-survey instruments. Intelligent control, navigation, communications, energy storage, propulsion and subsystem power use are considered. The authors draw on their experience with the MIT Sea Grant AUV "Odyssey".
