A series of tests conducted at the Deer Island (Massachusetts) Primary Treatment Plant during spring and summer 1992 determined the efficacy of chitosan and other natural flocculents in wastewater treatment. Results for metal, TSS (total suspended solids), PAH and COD (chemical oxygen demand) removal were obtained for chitosan as a primary coagulant and as a coagulant aid. Situations where chitosan is economically feasible were assessed.
