This book of case studies was written to be used in transportation courses occuring in the intermodal movement of marine containers during the last decade. The width of some containerships now exceeds the width of the Panama Canal. Some port facilities now have semi-automated cranes with twin or dual hoists, intermodal container transfer facilities, automatic equipment identification, electronic data interchange, and double-stack trains. However, the application of new technology has not been uniform across the industry. The diversity of market segments allows for a variety of technologies to thrive. Managers involved in intermodal movement of containers must be able to evaluate new technologies to be competitive. On the one hand, decision-makers must be flexible enough to adapt to new technologies. On the other, they must keep from spending money on the technologies that cannot be economically implemented in their market segment. The book deals with many of the issues that ocean carriers, railroads and ports have confronted in recent years. Specific innovations are described along with their economic, regulatory, political and labor-related aspects.
