Tributyltin (TBT) is an antifouling agent in marine paints. Because of the toxicity of TBT in aquatic ecosystems, its use has been greatly restricted. The authors assayed TBT in sediments from 12 sites in Boston Harbor. While little TBT was found at sites with little boating activity, sites at which there is extensive boating activity were highly polluted. It is expected that as restrictions on the use of TBT-containing paint take effect, TBT at these sites will decline.
