The Towed Underwater Gear Observation System (TUGOS) was developed as a compact system for in-situ observation of fishing gear. TUGOS is a towed underwater vehicle controlled by cable from a fishing or research vessel. It is fitted with cameras and floodlights and its control surfaces allow the operator to pilot the vehicle in and around a towed net. This report describes the TUGOS system in detail as well as its gear observation experience to date and its use in regional selective fishing gear development.
