Although organotins are widely used to retard fouling of marine structures, their toxicity to many organisms in aquatic ecosystems, especially organisms living in or on sediment, has led to restrictions on their application. Conventional assay methods for organotins do not work with organotins in marine sediments. The authors have devised a method for rapidly determining organotins which employs extraction of sediments, formation of organotin hydrides, chromatographic separation of individual hydrides, and quantification of individual organotin hydrides by atomic absorption spectrometry.
