Instability of the Far Wake of a Steadily Advancing Ship

The three-dimensional linear stability of the viscous wake far behind a ship at low Froude numbers is analyzed. It is assumed that the wake has reached a self-similar parallel flow state, around which the Euler equations are linearized. It is found that the wake becomes unstable, and that the instability is of the convective type. The free-surface manifestation of the instability wave exhibits a characteristic staggered pattern of alternating hills and valleys, which is antisymmetric abo ut the axis of the wake. For low Froude numbers, the frequency and phase-velocity of these gravity waves is determined by the characteristics of the shear flow in the wake.
