The stability of the wake of an object, such as a ship, floating on the ocean surface is an important consideration in satellite sensing of the ocean surface. An important aspect of this problem is the effect of free surface of the object on the stability and pattern of the wake. It is shown that the presence of the free surface has a stabilizing effect at low Froude numbers, suppressing the unsteadiness in the wake.
