Absolute instabilities and self-sustained oscillations in the wakes of circular cylinders

A new means of stability analysis is used to show that the von Karman vortex street in the wake of a circular cylinder is due to an absolute instability of the flow in the near wake. Linear stability analysis provides a relatively simple way of understanding the dynamics of the wake. Good agreement between analytical results and experimental observations suggests that the present methodology could potentially be applied to a variety of phenomena in flow transition and turbulence.
