The Development of a Semi-pelagic Trawl for Squid and Butterfish

Clifford A. Goudey

While squid and butterfish are normally found on the sea floor, they can also be found further up in the water column. Bottom trawl gear is too low to capture stocks in midwater, and midwater trawls are not useful when the species are on the bottom. This report describes a sea-bottom trawl modified by a novel rigging technique that allows the trawl to ride at specified fishing heights.
