Waste-heat-driven refrigeration plants for freezer trawlers

An analysis is made of utilizing waste heat from a proposed gas-turbine fishing-vessel propulsion engine to power a refrigeration plant. On the basis of superior volume, maintenance, reliability, cost and availability, an ammonia-water absorption system is chosen over other waste-heat-driven options considered. While its initial cost is likely to be higher, this waste-heat-driven alternative is deemed worthy of further consideration because of its significantly lower operating costs.
