Tension leg platforms represent the transition in offshore structures from depending on compression members to relying on tension members. Over the past decade a geotechnical study at MIT has probed the interaction between friction piles used to support offshore structures and their underlying soils. Large scale load tests have verified the MIT approach which combines analytical methods with measurements obtained by the new Piezo-Lateral Stress cell to analyze and predict the behavior of friction piles.
