Tow tank results of bulbous bow retrofits on New England trawler hulls

Retrofitting New England type trawler hulls with bulbous bows carries the potential for reducing fuel costs (with concomitant space increases). Model basin experiments with two hull types and twelve bulbous bow types are described here, and clearly indicate improved efficiencies and seakeeping characteristics at cruising speeds, although at low speeds the bulbous bows are detrimental. The ultimate value of a retrofit would depend on the details of the trawling operation and the cost of the retrofit, and should not be undertaken without the services of a naval architect.
