The dynamics of translating cables

Michael Triantafyllou
1985
MITSG 85-38J

In this paper techniques previously developed by the author are extended to treat the problem of a cable translating between ideal end supports, horizontal or inclined. The asymptotic solutions obtained explain the phenomena found by Simpson for horizontal shallow sag catenaries, while new solutions are obtained for inclined shallow and large sag cables.
