Test results from the New England trawl net training courses

Clifford A. Goudey
MITSG 85-33

During training courses at the David Taylor Naval R&D facility, interested trawler fishermen were given the opportunity to experiment with trawl rigs and examine their performance through viewing windows in a test tank. Results were reported in a series of articles in "Commercial Fisheries News", and are reprinted here. Tests were made of the 3-in-1 trawl and its modification for small draggers, the Yankee 4-1 (ready for retirement?), and the Canadian balloon trawl. Other topics include set-back, adjustability, box net height, formulas for door spread and spread ratio vs. bridle angle, and mesh size optimization.
