Advances in Acoustically Focused Oceanographic Sampling (AFOS) are presented in this paper. AFOS enables high- resolution adaptive sampling of oceanic fields using synoptic estimates derived from the assimilation of acoustic data. The authors review the results of a feasibility study of AFOS conducted in the coastal environment of Haro Strait, British Columbia, using an acoustictomographic approach. A formal acoustic data assimilation framework has since been developed in order to combine acoustic data with other data streams into generic ocean models. This framework is outlined, and current implementation issues are discussed.
