Applying AUV Lessons and Technologies to Autonomous Surface Craft Development

Previously at MIT the development of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Autonomous Surface Craft (ASCs) were pursued independently. This paper describes the effort to combine AUV and ASC research into a streamlined standard. The final ASC and AUV configurations incorporating AUV- based technologies are described and the results of field tests are presented. The paper concludes with an assessment of the benefits and limitations of this approach.
