Executive Summary
During the early years of the ESRDC program (then called ESI, Electric Ship Initiative) we developed, at the request of the Navy, a new set of classes that promote analysis, design, and hands-on building experiences with electromagnetic and electromechanical systems for undergraduate and early graduate students.
The proposed activities support the development of a spiral curriculum in EECS, where lab stations used in the department laboratories can also appear in revised versions of the early core classes in the department.
This work was part of a department-wide effort to reinvigorate the hands-on laboratory experiences in the EECS undergraduate core, and to provide a direct exposure to issues in electric power systems and integrated power systems for US Navy (13A/2N officers) completing graduate work at MIT.
