Autonomous underwater vehicles, (AUVs), as discussed here, are untethered mobile instrumentation platforms which have actuators, sensors, and on-board intelligence to successfully complete survey and sampling tasks. Cost and safety are two driving forces behind the development of these robotic submersibles. This paper describes the methods by which AUVs are beginning to be used for oceanography.
