Proposal Summary

In this project, researchers will develop the algorithms and software for a novel three-dimensional (3D) imaging system to characterize marine particles such as plankton in-situ as well as in-situ 3D particle imaging velocimetry (PIV). The research will improve the ability to monitor plankton, which are a major food source and an indicator of ocean health. The technology will also allow the tracking of fish schools, larvae, and marine snow, which is a major mechanism for particulate carbon transfer from surface waters to the seafloor.
