Whole Foods Clam Bake to Benefit MIT Sea Grant

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—On Saturday, July 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m, Whole Foods Market will host a seafood feast, "Goodwill from the Gill," to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable seafood practices. All proceeds from the event will benefit the MIT Sea Grant College Program.
At the Saturday event, Whole Foods Market will serve up local fresh mussels, as well as clams, potato salad, grilled corn and drinks, all for the bargain price of $5. The market will also be showcasing Pigeon Cove, its local seafood facility in Gloucester, with oyster shucking demonstrations and tastings.
At "Goodwill from the Gill," MIT Sea Grant staff will be showcasing innovative educational initiatives, such as the Sea Perch program, in which students build their own remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). Student-built ROVs are now collecting scientific data on the Around the Americas, a 13-month expedition that is promoting environmental education and collecting data to help gauge the effects of global climate change on the oceans and marine life.
MIT Sea Grant will also showcase its involvement with Cape Ann Fresh Catch, a community-supported fisheries project in Gloucester.
Past collaborations between MIT Sea Grant and Whole Foods Market have helped to raise awareness about educational programs such as Adopt-a-Boat, which pairs K-12 classrooms with fishermen, and The Blue Lobster Bowl, in which students demonstrate their knowledge of biology, marine science, chemistry, and ocean engineering.
