Lincoln-Sudbury Wins 2008 Blue Lobster Bowl

Students from Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School took home the first-place prize at the 2008 Blue Lobster Bowl held at MIT on February 9, 2008. That team will head to Seward, Alaska in late April for the final competition in The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). The second place award went to Lexington High School, with Newton North coming in third. In all, the event saw 22 teams, with 100 students from these schools: Bedford High School, Brookline High School, Cambridge Rindge & Latin School, Lexington High School, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School, Lynn Classical High School, Marblehead High School, Newton North High School, North Andover High School, Philips Academy, and Weymouth High School.

Sponsored by the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, the NOSB is an annual round robin competition that tests students’ knowledge of ocean-related issues and encourages the next generation of marine scientists, policy makers, teachers, explorers, researchers, technicians, environmental advocates and informed citizens. And, students will tell you, it’s fun! Approximately 2,000 students from over 400 high schools are participating in the 2008 NOSB.

The keynote speaker this year was Gerardo Jose la O', part of First Step Coral, a team of MIT graduate and undergraduate students who have implemented an award-winning marine education program and innovative coral reef regeneration system in the Philippines. The Blue Lobster Bowl is co-sponsored by The MIT Sea Grant College Program, The MIT Center for Ocean Engineering Research, and The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
