The life stages of a marine finfish raised through aquaculture

Can you identify the eye spots and tail?
Move your mouse over an area and see!

  Egg period
-The fish embryo develops inside the egg.

-Eye spots will develop on the sides of the head, followed by the development of the lenses.

-Over time the embryo's pigmentation (coloration of tissues) becomes numerous including the lens of the eyes.

-As the embryo develops, it wraps around the inside of the egg.

-The heartbeat is evident.

Can you identify the yolk sac?
Move your mouse over an area and see!

Yolk sac larvae period
-Hatching will occur once the embryo's yolk sac is fully developed.

-The tail of the embryo will break out of its egg shell and then it becomes a free-swimming yolk sac larvae.

-The larvae's yolk sac is located near the abdomen. The larvae depends on their yolk sac for nutrition until their mouth and eyes are fully developed. This can take from 2-10 days depending on the fish species.

-The end of the yolk sac period signifies the larvae being able to feed on live prey.

Can you identify the finfold or rotifers in the larval's stomach?
Move your mouse over an area and see!
  larvae period
-Because their eyes are still developing, the larvae depends on feed that is moving around (i.e. live feed) to help stimulate a feeding response.

-One of the first types of live feed that marine larvae eat are rotifers. You can see the digested rotifers inside larvae as they appear white in their stomach.

-
Once the larvae is approximately 8 mm in length, Artemia (brine shrimp) is often introduced as the next type of feed.

-When the larvae hatch, they have a finfold around its whole body that looks like an outline.

-This fold will eventually develop into fins beginning the process of metamorphosis. eyes eyes

Juvenile Fish
Can you identify the full formed fins?
Move your mouse over an area and see! fin

Juvenile period
-Fish starts to eat dry feed and should thrive and show signficant growth rates as long as the environment remains healthy.

-Organ systems are completely formed.

-Fins are fully formed.

-This period of development lasts until the gonards are mature.

Adult fish

Adult period
-Once the gonads are mature, the fish is now able to reproduce. This signifies the adult stage.
