Strategic
Plan, 2008-20012
Table of Contents/Introduction
Introduction
Our strategic plan is inspired by our vision and governed by both
our goals and objectives. Regional, national and global issues
of current and/or future concern all come to bear in our plan for
how best to proceed. This document explains how our efforts in
research, education, and outreach mesh with those of other organizations
currently addressing critical marine and coastal concerns. A number
of compelling issues demand our attention, either as a solo entity
or as a collaborative partner. And while many of these issues are
manifested locally, they are, for the most part, global in nature.
MIT Sea Grant aims, foremost, to employ innovative research, education
and outreach to best utilize and sustain our marine resources.
This strategic
plan conveys our mission as a Sea Grant College Program, as well
as our vision of how our work impacts the oceans
and all those people dependent upon them. The plan also provides
the context in which we operate, from both a geographical and
institutional standpoint, as well as that of the broader scientific
community.
In describing this scientific context, we also provide some
detail regarding the areas in which MIT Sea Grant has significant
expertise
and could have significant impact.
Our goals represent a suitable challenge to our research network,
as well as to our extensive and integrated education and outreach
components. These goals, in turn, mold and govern our annual
solicitation for new proposals, and guide us in both the long
and short term
toward projects whose success can best serve our constituents.
