Pre-Proposal Materials

The preliminary proposal consists of the following items only. Materials such as a detailed budget, bibliography, or letters of support are not required at this stage.
  1. Preliminary Proposal Cover Page (via online form)
  2. A six-page narrative description of the proposed work (via upload)
  3. Resume(s) of the Principal Investigator(s) (via upload)
The narrative description should not exceed six double-spaced pages, one side only. For all proposals, please address the following questions:
  • What is the marine-related problem, issue, need or hypothesis requiring this work?
  • What will be your approach? Include theoretical studies, laboratory analyses, and/or fieldwork, and the approximate amount of time needed for these activities.
  • Who will use and benefit from your research? How will results be made available to the user?
  • What is the project's relevance to the MIT Sea Grant College Program goals as outlined in the Strategic Plan?
  • How does this project contribute to the basic scientific discipline involved?
  • What about this project demonstrates support, cooperation and/or collaboration with industry, government and community groups (e.g., sources of non-federal matching funds?)
For a Focused Research Proposal, please also address the following issues:
  • What is the plan for seeking the required alternative funding sources?
  • Have you identified the team members and their capabilities, and described how they complement one another?

Provide a curriculum vitae (resume) for each investigator. You may use the MITSG resume template, or your own format.

N.B: No letter of transmittal is required at this stage. However, by submitting the cover page of this proposal, Principal Investigators certify that:
  1. They are eligible to submit an external proposal
  2. Their budget, including matching fund estimates, has been checked by the appropriate authority in their organizations, and
  3. They agree to the review process described.
All correspondence from MIT Sea Grant after receipt of the Preliminary Proposal will be addressed to the Principal Investigator.

For More Information

Investigators are encouraged to contact the director and officers of the MIT Sea Grant College Program to ask questions or discuss proposal ideas. This is especially important if there are any concerns about the relevance of a specific research topic, or as to its appropriateness for inclusion in the Focused Research Programs.
